Weekly Numbers

There were many recent comments on my last post about my weekly training numbers. Please keep in mind - my A race is in May...and it's February already. Hell, I may not DO another race this year after May chews me up and spits me out with 3State 3Mountain Century, REV3 Half IM and Triple T for Pete's sake! We'll see. Specifically, I got questions about my 6000 swim for this week. ***Disclaimer - this is NOT to sound snotty or over the top. The truth is, I don't get into the water for less than 3000 yards or meters UNLESS I'm doing a brick specific workout or tapering. This year, I will max at 9000/week or three workouts. My max ever was 20,000 metards in a week and my blood and urine were polluted with chlorine, I'm sure of it. Could I get the same or more benefit if that 6000 was over three or four days, even? Maybe. For the most part, I don't get into the water for less than 3000 and for me it's scheduling. The pool is not the most convenient thing in the world and requires so much showering in a day. My skin is dry enough, thank you very much. So there.

So far this week - two runs, two bikes, one swim, one lift...long run, long bike, one swim and one lift to go. Yep, I'll make it.

Oh, did you know that sheet cake is NOT proper fuel for your post work workout? I was doing 3 x 1 mile repeats with a 1.5 warm up and 1.5 cool down. Yeah, the track is 1.5 miles from the house. Anyway, someone at work left a daYum sheet cake out and the end with the frosting 'rose' on it was left. Far be it from me to let it go to waste. I took a slab of cake that was at least the size of a babies head and ate it with glee. I thought I was going to puke frosting all over myself trying to run at the track. That daYum cake tasted good but it wasn't worth it...as always, the guilt has settled in. The real question, will I be able to resist the next sheet cake? Please, friends, do NOT have a birthday any time soon. I KNOW, I KNOW, I gotta fit into that singlet...crap!

Freakin' sheetcake. Our office has one practically every week! I am powerless to the Costco mousse filled cake.

I am glad I work mostly from home.

And I agree with Carly, Costco's icing is sinful.

I thought nothing of the volume when I read it initially but I took a look at my plan to see if my brain need to be recalibrated. My "A" race is mid June. This week I have 6 hours of riding, 3 hours of running (walking for me), and 3 short swims (2 hours)....and I'm injured! So nothing off there.

Now cake, that's a different story. It is birthday season here. Luckily, the fam isn't sheet cake fans. Unluckily, they are ice cream cake fans.

Whoa... I didn't realize what your schedule looked like for March to May. I'm sure you'll do just absolutely amazing and finish with flying colors.

Sorry to hear about the cake incident. Sounds like you should have taken the piece home with you for after your run!

I know how you feel with swimming. I usually do a minimum of 2500 yards. That takes me around 45 minutes depending on the work out I am doing. Any less than that and it doesn't feel worth driving to the pool, changing, showering, swimming, showering again, and driving home. :)

Good luck fighting off the cake!

mmmm soft goey center. i would have eaten the sheet cake too.

if it were ice cream cake - i would be all over that shit.

i really hate swimming. unfortunately jen loves swimming and tries to get me to love swimming even if its a 1000 yard workout. bummer :(

Mmmmmmmm, sheet cake :) Most days I love working from home, but I do miss those office birthday cakes!

I think when you get done with all this, you will be bullet proof...then After TTT...you'll be glad it's over...but still feel bullet proof....you are one tough gal.

Sheetcake? Who knew?

metards. Here we see the fallout from the incomplete conversion to a rational system of measurement and how it screws up good peoples. The difference between yards and metres is nearly 10%, which is certainly big enough to notice. 3000 m is 3280.8 yards. Or if you insist, 3000 yards is 2743.2 m. I figure that most people ought to know if they are swimming in a pool that is yards or metres. I don't care which unit is used, but the confusion bothers me.

I sympathize with your not wanting to hit the pool for anything less than 3K. I'm the same, and feel the same about the bike. Anything much less than 1.5 hours isn't worth getting changed for.

I'm sure you're going to fit into that singlet just fine. I for one am eagerly awaiting the photo.

your training schedule is your training schedule, come on people if you are jealous that she puts in teh miles, get your floaties on your arms and get in the pool! I love your determination and the result of it I am sure you will love! As for teh cake, I would have eaten it as well! Put anything sweet on front of me for 2 minutues and it is gone! Keep going!

Love me some cake! Especially a corner piece with a rose on it. Wasting that amount of frosting is a crime. Everyone in my office knows that I get a corner piece or someone dies...

I should know Feb 19 whether or not I will be doing Rev 3. But really, 3K in the pool? LOL... I am just getting back to 2K+. It's all in the plan... :-D

I find most deserts look great, but about 10 minutes after eating them, I feel bloated and over-full. When will I learn that they always make me feel like "sheetcake"?

I do pretty good avoiding cake, bakery is really not a "thing" for me-don't hate me! NOW, put down a box of Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls (which I just became a fan of on FB!) in front of me and you'd see a beast come out like nothing else you've ever seen!!
May is going to be a killer, but if anyone can handle it with a smile-it's you!

Right now my coach is all about time and not distance, taken the thinking out of it, well that why we pay them, for us not to think

3000m....I haven't swum that far yet! But my feeling is that I haven't done enough if my workout isn't 2000m, so we all have our thresholds, right?

You definitely have a busy few months coming up!!

Sheet cake..yum! I am powerless to the date square and Nanaimo bars, a Canadian dessert treat that I can't even begin to explain what it is. Suffice it to say, it contains lots of butter and some chocolate.

I LOVE cake. Seriously. In an office of 350, there is a birthday every week or so. After a couple vomit in the back of my throat runs, i'm able to resist the super saccharine icing.

Cake is one of my biggest weaknesses. More so than cookies or ice cream! I love cake!!!!!!

I don't get into the pool for less than 2000 usually. I can usually bust that out in 30 minutes or so and I don't like to do any cardio/exercise for less than 30 minutes. I'm not quite at 3000 but I've been hovering in the 2500-2700 range and have been suffering spaghetti arms =). I'm sure in a few weeks that'll be no problem for me and my arms will be steel not spaghetti!

Way to rock those workouts!

you're doing great! 20k in a week? holy shit. the most i think i have swam in a week was 9.5 miles during IM training.

sugar is some nasty shit, for sure.

Missy you will be fine. Sheetcake isn't a big deal from time to time. Your singlet did call and said it had shrunk a couple of sizes over the winter just to be funny...

Cake! Yum! Feeling like you're going to puke cake...not so much.

I swim 2 hours on Sundays. I haven't been able to stick another swim time in yet, but would like too. I will have try to count what how much we swim in those two hours. I haven't worried too much as 2 hours 1 x per week was far more than I was doing on my own last year!

I'm the same way about cake. I'd eat it till I popped, so I'm sure I would have felt the same way you did.

The whole showering/shampooing thing is (seriously...wimpy I know) a HUGE issue with me and one of my hesitations about swimming. It's not the water and it's really not even about the sharks, it's about the effect that water, chlorine, salt etc will have on my skin and hair (Yes, I'm vain to a degree, but that's not really the issue. The dry skin thing? It just hurts!).

I don't know where I'm going with this...its just shiz I fret about.

Jo Lynn said...

The size of a babies head? HA! That made me spit my water out of my mouth.
I CANNOT pass up cake. No way, no how. If I have to, I will go puke up myt meal so I can have cake. No lie. ;)

Keith said...

Oh, Leana, now you've done it. Date square and Nanimo bars. No explanation needed for me. Yum.

Molly said...

I'm with you, anything under 3000 m in the pool just doesn't seem worth the hassle for me. between getting to the pool, putting on a bathing suit, then having to shower and dry off after, it better be a decent long workout!!

D said...

What did you say about sheet cake? You take that back!

D said...

I just did the stupid thing and skimmed through previous comments - saw Leana's and now I'll definitely be having some Nanaimo bars this weekend. You Yanks are really missing out on this one ;)

That is so NOT snobby. Furthermore, anybody who thinks that is snobby needs to pull thier head out of their ass! I totally get it. Your 3000 is my 2000. Anything less and I feel like "why bother". If I can spend more time in the pool for two days than less in three - I'm all for it!

20,000 m. WTF?! *That's* crazy!
